Mafia Wars Closes on Yahoo

Share:

Mafia Wars is no longer available on Yahoo. Zynga Customer Support posted an announcement and FAQ about Mafia Wars ending on Yahoo on Jan 15th. There will be compensation for those who got to Level 30. Don't get excited and think you can get to Level 30 before the 15th and get compensated. You can't play anymore and have until the 15th to get your PIN redemption code. Players are encouraged to start playing on mafiawars.com. Go here for the complete FAQ and to check for updates

Mafia Wars on Yahoo FAQ

NOTE: We regret to announce that our relationship with Yahoo will be ending on 01/15/2012.  As a thank you for playing, we’d like to jump-start your Mafia Wars account on MafiaWars.com.  With over 2 million daily players, new cities, and weekly content updates, you will be part of one of the largest game populations in the world.

Q: Why is Mafia Wars on Yahoo shutting down?
A:  We apologize to all Yahoo players that we are closing our game on this network.  It was a tough business decision that we had to make in the interest of the entire Mafia Wars franchise.

I remember when Mafia Wars was introduced on Yahoo on November 18th of 2010, Zynga asked me to write a post about it on their blog (1). They seemed really excited about it at the time.

One thing they got wrong in their announcement is the statement "With over 2 million daily players, new cities, and weekly content updates, you will be part of one of the largest game populations in the world.".  I don't know where they come up with these numbers. There are only 580,000 daily players.  Maybe the guy who wrote the announcement thought he was looking at the daily numbers when he was actually looking at the monthly statistics (1).
Correcting the mistake should be a wake up call. We learned during the New Year's Resolutions Event that the application metrics reported by Facebook are greatly exaggerated (1)(2). They couldn't even get 2 million votes in an event where each player got a free vote for 6 days in a row and were able to collect another 11 if completed. The big question is will Zynga remove Mafia Wars from Facebook if too many players quit?

Thanks to one of my long time admins and {ASS} Family member Leonard Wong for posting this information on the fan page. Sadly Leonard has decided to quit playing Mafia Wars and will be greatly missed by the many members in the community who he helped.

  2. What??? You're taking an ad from over a year ago and claiming they got the DAU wrong using today's number. That makes no sense whatsoever...

As for quitting, this latest property has me debating it. It's pretty much a must have property, and you need some 800 parts. That's ridiculous. I really am starting to feel like a trained click monkey, dutifully doing what Zynga tells me to. This is no longer fun at all, the only thing keeping me playing is OCD/addiction.

  3. (Oops! Please diregard what I said earlier about comparing the current DAU to an old announcement. When I first read this page the closure announcement did not show up so I thought you were talking about when MW was announced on Yahoo.)

  4. With over 2 million daily players, <--- Even their FAQs are full of bugs :D

Calculating the DAU from the event 100.000 is a more realistic number.
