Facebook Explains Outage

Share:

Those of us who were awake earlier today could not log on to our Facebook accounts and therefore couldn't play Mafia Wars (1).  This didn't affect a few lucky script users because their games were unframed and they were able to keep playing.  Shortly after Facebook was back up, the rumors started flying.  The one below was going all over the Mafia Wars community.  It was plastered all over my news feeds and many clans and groups sent it to their members inboxes.
This seemed a bit ridiculous to me as there are over 400 Million Facebook users.  I wasn't about to go through the hassle of changing my password and hopefully most of you didn't either.  Karen Massey let me know about a post made on the Facebook Engineering page titled More Details on Today's Outage that explains everything.  It's kind of technical but basically there was some kind of computer feedback loop (whatever that means) and their solution to fix it was to stop all traffic from coming on to the site and gradually allow it to come back.
"The way to stop the feedback cycle was quite painful - we had to stop all traffic to this database cluster, which meant turning off the site. Once the databases had recovered and the root cause had been fixed, we slowly allowed more people back onto the site."/Robert Johnson, Facebook Engineering Page
