There are lots of options to give and receive gifts in Mafia Wars.  There are several internal and external gifting systems.  All players have different views and thought processes on giving and receiving gifts.  Nobody is right or wrong and it's your choice on what type of players you keep in your mafia.
Gifting within the game is easy to do.  As long as your FB friend is a member of your mafia, you can go to their Mafia Wars profile and send them a gift.  Accepting gifts that you receive can be a little trickier if you plan on gifting everyone back.  If you accept a gift from the home page, there is no gift back option and the persons information will disappear from your screen.  Unless you know who the person is, it's going to be difficult to find them.

The best way to avoid this is not to accept the gift from the home page and click on loot or collections and all your gifts will appear with a gift back option.  If you gift back to one person, the other people who sent you gifts will disappear.  Right clicking on the gift back button and opening a new tab is the best way to store this information.  You can then go back to each window and send that person a gift.

If you have a lot of gifts this can be very time consuming and it is possible that not all gifts will show up or problems will be encountered while trying to open new tabs.  I try to find the gifts that are more valuable and ensure that I gift back to that person.  In this example, "Mark the Mobster" chose me to dump his 9mm Semi-Automatic (3/2) and Brass Knuckles (2/2) onto.  Thanks Mark, but I didn't spend the time gifting you back.  Now "Arch-Angel" was cool and gave me some Titanium Katars (35/50) so he was my #1 priority to gift back.  If you send a gift to someone and expect a gift in return, it's best to make a post on that persons wall to let them know it was you.  

The Crime Spree has been added back and has replaced The Gift Safe House The Wiki Crime Spree Page has more updates on the gifts that are associated with this.  The stats on these items are low.  The 5 bonuses we can receive a day for sending these gifts to our mafia members are still a part of this feature.  Once a player requests a gift, you can send it to them.  Remember that a lot of players have very large mafias and may not be able to respond to every request.

There are also external gifts we can receive.  These are found on the far right of your FB home page. If  you get a lot of these, it can be hard to keep up with them.  FB will show you 100 at a time but will store more than this.  If you accept 100 and think your work is done, you will soon find out that you have 100 more.  Miller Marklets JGrabAllGifts is the best solution for accepting these.  My post titled Bookmarklets explains how to use this program but Josh made a cool video which makes learning it more fun.  Mystery bags, Crime Spree gift requests, and Free gifts are all found here.  Zynga introduced a new feature to accept some of these within the game.  It only holds 25 items.  The smart people at TopMafia.Info even figured out glitch in the system and you can send 25 mystery bags to one person.  Visit the The TopMafia.Info Forum to learn how to do this.
