The Manhattan Exploit

Share:

Well over a year ago, Zynga added a new destination called Manhattan. It replaced New York in a small percentage of new accounts. This was a major problem when Missions were introduced into the game because accounts with Manhattan are unable to perform many of the Mission tasks. In March of this year, Zynga was being nice and offered to convert these accounts back to New York (1). Keep in mind it was emphasized that you could not get Manhattan added to your account.

Default Do you have Manhattan?

Hey Mafia Fans,

If you are a Manhattan player that would like New York (includes missions), please send me a PM with your UID.

*Switching from Manhattan to New York may reset your New York progress.*

*This is not for those that want Manhattan, this is for those that have Manhattan but want New York.*

Thanks,

CM

There is much more to this story. Accounts with Manhattan have a special ability that will enable any other account to level up non-stop. The technique used is possible because of the Boss Fights. There are 8  Districts in Manhattan and each one has it's own Boss.
(images from the Mafia Wars Wiki)
A few of the Bosses allow you to ask your mafia for help. I'll use the District 4 Boss, Donald Harper, as an example.
When your mafia members click on your request for help, they get to fight the Boss too. It doesn't matter if they have Manhattan or not.
When you click on the request for help, you will be notified of how much stamina is required and have an option to leave or fight.
If you decide to fight and are successful in defeating the Boss (it isn't hard), you get a nice experience pay out. This was a Silver Level Boss Fight and I got 437 experience for helping.
Here is where it gets interesting. There is no cap on the number of times you can help. As long as the player with Manhattan doesn't defeat the Boss, they can start the Boss Fight and ask for help as many times as they want. In turn, you can help them as many times as you want and get large experience bonuses every time you do. To demonstrate, I helped with the Donald Harper Boss Fight on the Ruby Level multiple times. I underlined my experience needed to level to show that the screen shots are not identical.
Fight #1
41,094 Experience Needed to Level
+511 Experience
 Fight #2
40,583 Experience Needed to Level
+511 Experience
 Fight #3
40,067Experience Needed to Level
+511 Experience
I could have done this all night long and gained as many levels as I wanted to. The fact is there are many players who have been doing just that for over a year. Anybody can help with the same Boss Fight so one little account from Manhattan can be used to level up many players. Mike Nestor also helped with this Boss at the same time I did when it was on the Gold Level.
Those who were all pissed off that some players were able to get unlimited war loot that is now outdated should be extra pissed about this. While Zynga has been pumping out new content which is driving the player base away, they failed to take a look at existing features and some have major holes. The Ruby Level District 8 Boss of Manhattan offers a 830 experience payout to helpers and accounts with Manhattan have been a valuable thing on the Black Market. Power Leveling services have been using Manhattan as a means to quickly level accounts for a profit. It's been going on for a long time and Zynga hasn't done anything to stop it. Will rollbacks happen? Probably not as it would be very difficult to figure out. This exploit blows a leveling playing field out of existence. Even if they fix it, the damage has already been done.

Many thanks to Little for letting me use his account with Manhattan to document this exploit.

  1. Thanks for posting this - it explains many, many things. Any remaining delusions of fairness I had about Zynga's running of this game are now gone, as I believe I will be quite soon now. :(

  3. Even worse than the disaster which was the first secret district where those players who got in early benefited from ridiculous ratios which they then 'fixed'. No one got rolled back so anyone who got in early had a massive advantage from doing so. Yet players who didn't even benefit from the War Loot exploit also got rolled back along with those who did. This is even worse... All I have ever wanted from Zynga is a level playing field - yeah right!

  4. I have an account with Manhattan by default. Manhattan is complete and you get nothing for it unlike you do NY. Never have I been asked in any way if I want to change to NY as my answer would be YES!. Manhattan was a mistake right from the get go and I wish Zynga would undo that mistake and fast.

  5. Barf...gag....el crappo...

You may recall when robbing was reintroduced that Zynga kept playing around with the bonus for completing screens. Well..the first day it was equal to a 100% XP bonus in addition to the XP's you got for winning the robberies.

This made it possible for a fighter account to serial level. No fighting script was available that first day. But I pounded away at it and went up close to 200 levels. This was when level 1000 meant something. This generated a boat load of skill points. Zynga messed around with the ratios and arrived at the current bonus very shortly thereafter. But that exploit had to be done manually...clicking on all those red rob buttons.

There was a cash exploit that let any number of players get to 999 Trillion.

I could go on. But most of these "exploits" were closed in short order.

Leaving this one open forever...simply a travesty. Probably the last straw for anyone ever foolish enough to actually trust Zynga.

But they sure sucked a lot of cash out of a lot of people.

Don't give up your day jobs.

  9. The message of this post is to show that there are a lot of exploits in the game and many that have been around a long time. Zynga puts out new content instead of fix what is broken and they always claim to nerf things for a balanced playing field. It's all bullshit.
@rofllmaoloz-if I made my living off this blog, I wouldn't be doing so well in live. Believe it or not this is a hobby and the ad revenue I earn pretty much goes to buying reward points. My finances are none of your business but I'm doing pretty good in life and have a lot of free time. If I needed money, I would get a full time job and quit blogging.

  11. We have all been there with exploits that work and then are fixed. Dont image that Zynga Cs solely looks at his blog. It would be foolish to imagine so, it may only affect a small number of players, so enjoy what you have received. With the looks of the daily player, we will be searching for something new this time next year.

Mwlootlady only gathers what is out on several other blogs, sites and puts them into 1 page for all to read, akin to a news paper editor, you shouldn't critise her & team for the work.
The community as a whole benefits, and so you loose one bit, hey its a game, not life.
