Warstorm To Shut Down

Share:

It's been a little short of a year since I posted about a new big Zynga game called Warstorm (1). You may remember it was all over Mafia Wars. We anticipated a cross game promotion but that never happened.
Now we know for sure there will never be a cross game promotion because Warstorm is going to be shut down at the end of the month for existing players. If you never played the game, you won't be able to as all access has been shut down.  For some history, Cerulean Masters first position was a Super Moderator with this game and here is one of his last posts.

Default Important Announcement Concerning Warstorm (8/31/2011)

Dear Warstorm players,

Our goal at Zynga is to bring players the most fun and social games, but despite a strong and passionate community, we have decided to shut down Warstorm in 30 days to focus our efforts on bringing new and innovative games to our players.

As of today, Warstorm is no longer available to new users and will not accept additional purchases. Existing players will be able to access the game until September 30, 2011. Below are some frequently asked questions that may help.

To help us bid a fond farewell to the game, we’d love to hear your favorite memories about your experiences with Warstorm.

Thank you again for choosing Zynga as your favorite place to play.

Sincerely,
Zynga

Here are some frequently asked questions. I would pay attention to the last one. If you spent any money on this game it looks like you will be compensated with bonus packages and you can move it to Mafia Wars. 3 other little known word games are also shutting down. I imagine they are doing much better in the word game department with Words With Friends.

I paid money in Warstorm, what now?
Zynga is committed to helping Warstorm players find a new game to enjoy. We will be offering bonus packages for Warstorm players to try other Zynga games like CityVille, FarmVille, and Empires & Allies (to name a few). If you purchased Warstorm currency in the last 90 days, Zynga’s Customer Support department will transfer what you have spent plus 10% to another game of your choice.

You can see by the history of the application metrics it never really took off.

Comparing the metrics to Mafia Wars shows that there is quite a gap and we shouldn't worry about Mafia Wars being next. Mafia Wars is still on a decline and hasn't flat lined as Warstorm has.

  3. Welcome to online browser games :)
If we play normal installation game that could never happen to us.
I'm playing counter strike and people play that for more than 10 years and can still play till they get bored.

  4. Holy crap! They're shutting down a game with over a million daily players and you say that players of Mafia Wars shouldn't worry? Hasn't the Mafia Wars daily players gone below a million and is still falling? We're next!

  5. Oh wait, I see now. You posted the Mafia Wars chart for reference and Warstorm is that flat line at the bottom. Okay then... guess we do have a ways to go. Phew! Still, though, it's a disturbing thought. I wonder what their profit margin is these days on Mafia Wars?

  6. It seems Zynga is actually shutting down 4 games, all with around 20,000 daily players. Interesting. With Mafia Wars daily players in free fall I wonder how long we have...?
