A fraudulent trade is when two people agree on a trade and the first person sends their agreed upon items and the second person doesn’t. In the trading community, the second person is known as a scammer. Nobody wants to be the victim of a scammer and this is one of the reasons trading sites exist. Providing a safe environment for trading is the number one priority for all trading sites and why there are so many rules. If you become the victim of a scammer, you should not keep quiet about it. There is a group that can help you called The Official Scammer List. I asked the creator, Brent Cox, to explain what his group was about.
"We are guardians for the trade community and give our time and loot to make the community a safer and happier place for the trader but a living hell for the scammer. I started trading because it was the only way I would ever get a Daily Chance Collection. I was scammed 3 out of my first 5 trades and I was pissed. I found a group that helped me. They gave me a good chunk of my loot back, told me how to trade safe and pointed me in the direction of their Scammer List. At the time, they were looking for admin so I applied. It was my job to set up a suspected scammer through a sting trade and gather proof. The group I was with was 30,000+ members strong and was disabled by Facebook because they didn't like the idea of us posting the scammers links.
After that I decided to start my own group called The Official Scammers List (TOSL), I had help from Don Sam and Robert Robildo. They have been and are instrumental in creating, maintaining and operating our website. The website is an important tool for us because it is where we have our Scammer List and we can avoid any issues with Facebook. Once a trader is scammed they submit a report on the website and we review it. If we can validate the proof and it's good enough for our Scammer List, we offer the victim a recovery of up to 2/3 of their losses.
After closing our Facebook Fan Page Wall for a few weeks we are now open again with a new RSS feed and a website chat room."/Brent Cox, creator, The Official Scammer List.
The Official Scammer List Website contains all the additional information you will need. The actual list of Scammers is located here along with any proof that was acquired during the investigation.

To file a report, click on "Report A Scammer" and you will be directed to report form page. Fill in the information and click submit.TOSL is in constant communications with the admin of the trading sites. Many sites keep their own database of scammers. I was the victim of a scammer because I failed to follow one of the important rules of trading. I did not use a trading site wall and planned my trade through an inbox message. I knew the person who wanted to trade with me so I didn't think scamming was going to be a problem. Chris Barry scammed me and the only proof I had was our inbox correspondence. At the time, Chris had blocked me so his name and profile picture were gone. Chris was a Trusted Trader for The Elite Traders Club so I informed the creator Ram Krish of what happened. Chris tried to deny it but Ram insisted he unblock me and I was able to get a screen shot with Chris's name and profile picture.
Today Chris resides on the Elite Traders Scammers List.
Here is his current Mafia Wars name and his Facebook profile.
To get Chris placed on any Scammer List it was important that I didn't overreact and start accusing him of scamming on any walls. I also gave him the benefit of the doubt and waited about 2 weeks before I said anything to anybody. I went through proper channels and got results. Here are the list of rules posted on The Official Scammer List Fan Page. It's important that you follow them if you are ever the victim of a trading scam.
Rules:
1. PLEASE DO NOT EVER FOR ANY REASON POST A SCAMMER OR SAY SOMEONE IS A SCAMMER ON OUR GROUP WALL. USE THE REPORT A SCAMMER PAGE ON OUR WEBSITE FOR THIS INFORMATION!!
2. Add ALL Admin. (PLEASE ADD TOSL IN YOUR FRIEND REQUEST)
3. No ADD ME post are to be made on our wall. This is not an Add Me group. They will be deleted.
4. Do not spam our walls with garbage.
TIPS TO MAKE YOUR TRADE SAFE
1. Check The Official Scammer List Website to see if the person is listed as a scammer.
2. Make sure the person you are trading with has all the admins added of the trading site you are using.
3. Always keep your trades on the wall of the trade site. Never do PM's or chat. This is how most scammers get you!
4. Check the mutual friends and amount of friends of the person you are trading with.
5. Check to see if the person you are trading with has trading references.
6. If they say they are a TT somewhere check the site to see if they are actually a TT of the trade site.
7. As always if you are unsure of the person you are trading with ask for the admins to be the middleman. Most trading sites have a little if any middleman fee available for you and will be happy to assist you in any trade.
what we need is spockholm to create a script that links to this database and then scans our mafia for these scammers so we can delete+remove
ReplyDeleteThere is a Scammer bookmarklet which can be found here http://mwtsn.biz.nf/bookmarklet.php I havven't been able to verify if it's updated so didn't include it in this article. The Mafia Wars Unified Trading Ratios are working on unifying a scammer database. Once this happens a bookmarklet could be created.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant :). You should think of adding a rating system to your blog so that we can rate them :)... 5 stars for this blog :)...
