I received the following information from Ken Wainwright, an admin for the group I belong to, The Las Vegas Mafia {$LVM$}. I haven't been able to verify the source but will provide a link as soon as I get one. I'm posting this because it makes a lot of sense and explains much of what we don't know about the robbing equation. Even though Zynga changed the experience pay-out from robbing, I still plan to rob until I reach level 10. UPDATE: I found the source and was very impressed by the group The Daily Post. A full description of this group can be found two posts up. I thank The Daily Post for this good info.

They have rolled out new changes in mafia robbing
..Here are the important parts from a conversation with Zynga....

It's your best 3 items, and then a die that has a side for every mafia used in the robbing. So, if the robbing uses 100 members, you could bring anywhere between 1 and 100 to the robbing, and this is totally random and the "die is rolled" each time you rob. Your opponent also "rolls a die" to see how many members they will bring. So you could be way stronger than a person, but they could still beat you, although probability wise you will still win after a lot of robbing.
If you only have 30 members and your opponent has 501, and the robbing requires 200, you will bring a 30 sided die and your opponent will bring a 200 sided die, meaning that his likelihood of winning is much higher.

Attacker: Attack Skill+ 25% Mafia_AStr + Random (75% Mafia_Str)
where Mafia_AStr = Your Mafia size equipped with your best atk value equipment
Defender: Defense Skill + 25%Mafia_DStr + Random (75% Mafia_DStr) + Robbing Defense boost
where Mafia_DStr = your mafia size equipped with your best def value equipment
Mafia Size is determined by the type of property you are robbing as defined in the table above.
About Board clearance
The reason that the experience varies from one time to another has different factors attached to it, the numbers of Mafia members used in the robbing, city in which you are, level of the properties to be robbed, successful or unsuccessful robberies and a factor of randomness in the calculation of the robberies could make the experience provided vary, this is the reason why robberies cleared with 6-3 could obtain more experience than a board with 7-2 sometimes.
