How To Make a Screen Shot

Share:

Since I discussed screen shots in 2 previous articles, I felt it was necessary for me to help you learn how to make them if you already don't know how.  Since I'm not very computer savvy, my method is probably not the easiest or the fastest.  I didn't feel qualified to explain that one to you and the computer people would have cringed.  I want to thank VCDBurn of The Top Mafia.Info Forum for helping me find these excellent instructions and answering my questions.  If you have any computer knowledge, these instruction will seem like they were written for Mickey Mouse.  I'm not trying to insult your intelligence.  My goal is to help those, like myself, who don't have a computer background and are unable to follow standard computer terminology and directions.  The following instruction are copied from a discussion thread from the TopMafia.Info Forum Boards.  Thank you Jasseh for writing them.  I will follow your instructions and provide my own screen shots.  If you have further questions, feel free to post on the forum board as the players there are more than happy to help and answer all your questions.
Go to The TopMafia.Info Discussion Thread titled "How to take and post screenshot".
  • Press the "Print Screen"/"PrtScrReq" button on your keyboard.
  • Open an image editing program such as Paint, Adobe Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, etc.
  • Paste the screenshot into your image editor by pressing "Ctrl" + V or by selecting paste from the edit menu.
  • Edit the image to remove anything you do not wish to post (or add anything you do), crop the image to only show what is needed (cuts down on the size).
  • Save the image.
Option 2 (requires Firefox):
  • Install the Firefox add-on ScreenGrab!
  • From the page you wish to take a screenshot of right click your mouse and go down to ScreenGrab!.
  • Select Save or Copy followed by the type of screenshot you would like to take:
  • Complete Page/Frame - This option will save/copy the entire page, not just the section you can see in the window.
  • Visible Portion - This option will save/copy the section of the page that you can currently see.
  • Selection - This option will allow you do drag a box to select the area of the page that you wish to save/copy.
  • Window - This option doesn't seem to do anything for me, I assume it would work the same as "Visible Portion" but include the browser in the screenshot.
  • If you chose save then after making your selection it will bring up the save file menu asking you for the file name and where to save it, I generally leave the file names as they are and save them into a folder in "My Documents" but what you do is completely up to you.
  • If you chose copy then refer to option 1 about the image editor steps.
Option 3:
  • Download the program SnagIt, free trial available here: http://www.techsmith.com/download/snagittrial.asp
  • Install SnagIt then open it (you can set it to open when you start your computer or you can open it manually when you need it).
  • Note that the free trial is only usable for 30 days, a simple google search can solve that problem.
  • SnagIt has the options from ScreenGrab! and more. It also works for all programs, not just webpages in Firefox.
  • From the main SnagIt screen select the type of screenshot you would like to take, you can set hotkeys for each different type by right clicking the option then choosing "Set Hotkey".
  • After taking the screenshot using SnagIt your image will load in the SnagIt Editor where you can make changes or just simply save it by clicking the save button in the top left corner.
After you have saved your screenshot you will need to upload it before you can post it. There are many places you can upload your images before posting them here:
  • Your facebook photo album - right click the image and copy image location to get the URL for posting it here.
  • Imageshack - www.imageshack.us - Either register an account or just simply upload your image and copy the code after uploading, copy the "Embed this image" forum code and paste it in your post.
  • Photobucket - www.photobucket.com - Works almost the same as imageshack but requires you to register before uploading any images.
Post your image on the forums using either the code copied from the hosting site or the image url inside IMG tags.
After you read the instructions, choose the best option for you.  I tried option#1 number and had no luck with Paint so I moved on to option#2 and will use it for this article.  This option works if the browser you are using is FireFox.
1.  Go to the Tools prompt located in the upper left corner or your screen, click on it and a box will appear and then click Add-ons.
2.  A window will open click the Get-add-ons picture on top of the window-->Type screengrab in the search box-->type in Screen Grab-->Screengrab will now appear with a summary of what it does and a rating-->Double click on the rectangular screengrab box and the window will show a prompt for you to download it.
3.  Click the "Add to FireFox.." button-->wait for it to count down and store itself in your downloads.

4.  Restart FireFox and now Screengrab! is in your computer and ready to use.
5.  Now it's time to take some screen shots!!!  Decide what you want to copy and right click on your mouse.  A box will appear an you should see ScreenGrab! somewhere on it.  Click on it and you will get a prompt that asks if you want to save or copy the entire screen, the visible portion of your screen only or a section of the screen that you choose.  I'm going to save the portion of the TopMafia.Info Forum board that has these instructions on it.  To do this follow this pathway:  Right Click-->Click on Screengrab!-->Click on Save-->Click on Selection (the screen will turn pink)-->Point your mouse to the upper corner of the area you want to copy-->Right Click-->Drag over the image you want a shot of-->Release your mouse once the area is covered-->A save option will now appear-->Decide what you want to name it and where you want to save it-->Click Save and your done.

6. To retrieve the image, go to the file you stored it in, open it up, click on the image, and add it to where ever you want to send it.  Jasseh's instructions and Yonks Video explain this in greater detail.
Here is my saved image.
