There have been a total of 16 Family Ice Events and each one had the same issues. We often complained that the leaderboard had a capacity of 4 yet the top 10 got prizes and it seemed ridiculous that all 28,581 families were competing against each other. The Dominance Event is kind of what we asked for in a family competitive event. There are brackets, referred to as leagues of 90 families each. At this time we aren’t sure what the criteria to be placed in a particular league is but we know it’s not family size. Martin of Team Spockholm suspects it’s the number of ices each family has acquired and that makes sense. If you look at the Family Ranks Spreadsheet and compare the families in your league to the order of ices than you may see they are the same [1]. Only 30 of the 90 will get loot items but this is much better than a global icing competition in which only 5 families get 1 loot item. If a family can be in the top 30 for each of the 15 contests than they will get 45 loot items. To be in the top 3 and get skill points is nice but this structure provides something to the families who don't want to try too hard. Missing out on +1-+9 skill points isn't the worse thing in the world. You can spend 12 reward points during a 2X Property Build and get +12 guaranteed skill points and that should be the guideline to follow for any family thinking about spending reward points on boosts. The fact that each contest is on a 8 hour timer is also better than a 5-10 day dragged out event. I’m sure the entire Mafia Wars community was tired of seeing the same 4 families on the leaderboard and now there is variety (unless you are in the league with the top icing families). The leaderboard shows the top 30 families and isn’t ideal for those 31st-90th place but there is probably a better chance to get to spot 30 than there ever was to get to spot 4. The fact that those who don’t use scripts won’t have a chance is still a negative but the new structure gives families who don’t ice very well more opportunities to get something. Overall I think this is a good replacement and I won’t be sad to never see a Family Ice Event again.

Will Dominance Replace Family Ice Events?
There have been a total of 16 Family Ice Events and each one had the same issues. We often complained that the leaderboard had a capacity of 4 yet the top 10 got prizes and it seemed ridiculous that all 28,581 families were competing against each other. I was so disappointed in this event till I read this blog post what you are saying make sense and I hope you are right, I thought it was there to replace the family business events and I really enjoyed the chance to earn some family experience so hopefully we will still see those again sometime in near future.
ReplyDeleteNothing has changed for those in the top bracket with the script running families. They'll get better rewarded with the reward points than they would normally. Yeah...top 30 will get loot items...but still there is no way to break the mold of those top 3-4 families. Until they totally remove the script aspect (i.e. no more ARENAS counting icing) that things will ever change.
ReplyDeleteJust a fanzy edition of the Family Ice event... only good thing is... the families that are lucky to NOT be in the same league as the SUPER script users that ALWAYS win these events...they actually might stand a small chance now of actually being able to compete and win... but, for the 87 families that just "happens" to be in the same league as Sadist Mafia, vgttt and Assassin-a-Nators (wouldn't Assassin-a-tors have been more correct? lol) well... let's just say... poor luck for them, as they will have a snowman's chance in hell... or on earth for that matter... to even be considered for any skill points... no contest... Zynga just locked the super script users in a league of their own... maybe they should have put the Top 3 in a league... and let them have some fun for themselves... and then have divided the rest into leagues of 90... so no-one would have to go up against them... I feel bad for the 87 families that are in this league... but great for those that aren't
ReplyDeletesadist mafia sure has a lot of ices. No wonder they won so many ice events. Wonder how the top families are doing now that i cant see them
ReplyDeletePerhaps we can now retire the refrain of "Mafia Wars is about to end"? I can't imagine why a company that intends to discontinue a product 'any day now' [for three years or more] would continue to offer new events or twists on old events. That imagination and effort and cost would be diverted to other products.
ReplyDeleteThis is a step in the right direction, FINALLY!!!!! Spreading opportunity to a vast amount of the community is far better approach. The rich get richer format is of no benefit to the game or community that is still around to support this addicting, yet mildly fun game. ~Lonnie
ReplyDeleteIt is a step in the right dirction however How is it fair that a family of 9 is set in a league competing with a family of 84? Admittedly the combined stamina and energy might be relatively equal but when it comes to clicking and requesting clicks a family with 84 members has an unfair advantage against a family with only 9 - if they got rid of the third spammy aspect then it would be okay
ReplyDeleteSpeaking from one of the top 3 families, I can say we do not play for the "rewards". The loot, the skill points and RPs for winning an event are scant reward for the effort, time, organisation and real money we put into the game. We would play just as hard even if there were no rewards because its a game and games are played to be won.
ReplyDeleteThe good thing about the old event was that it gave a definitive result - you were in the top 4 (or not) as the case maybe. With the new event, there are 45 "events" over 5 days and frankly, I have lost track over how many events we have won or lost. The results fades into to meaninglessness. And frankly a "league" has no meaning without a prospect of relegation or promotion.
Z has consistently refused to make the old event better. It was easy to do: just make a more expansive leaderboard with better rewards. This new event is not a progressive step that some think. It is designed to encourage you to buy boosts with your precious RPs for some loot (which will become quickly obsolete) and a few skill points (the 2x build is a much better deal). If the consensus is that this new event is a good thing, I can only say - well done Z!
I would be interested to hear from the poster above and anyone else from the top families what amount of money they spend per month to play this game. Always been curious about that and also what their opinion is about the current state of Mafia Wars. Most of us commenting on here play solo or with smaller families.
