Application Metrics Site Change

Share:

For most of the time this blog has existed, the Mafia Wars application metrics data came from AppData. AppData decided that people should spend $5,595 a year to see these numbers so what is available without a subscription is very limited. All numbers reported on their site come from Facebook and as we have demonstrated with previous ranked events, they are far from accurate. It’s really not the accuracy in the numbers that is useful, it’s the comparing data over time. It doesn’t take someone smarter than Captain Obvious to figure out that Mafia Wars is a becoming a sinking ship. Fortunately there are other sites which also post this data (which is identical because it comes from Facebook). There was nothing special or different about AppData, it was just the site I chose to use (and then those who like to format their sites like ours chose as well). Shown below are more details of the current state of reported metrics and the new site we will be using to get them.

MetricsMonk supplies the same data in the same format as we have used before Appdata went to a ranking system, estimates and ridiculous subscription fees.  This will now be where the DAU and MAU metrics used on this blog will come from. The DAU and MAU charts for the last 30 days are shown below. The daily player number has decreased by about 5,000 but we all know there are way more minis than that in the game. It’s not uncommon to fire one up for something and not use it again for a few months.

Overall there were almost 60,000 more monthly users this month than last. While many of these are also alternate accounts, it’s encouraging to see some growth.

Of the game apps on Facebook, Zynga is still doing ok as 4 of their games are in the top 10.

Sadly Mafia Wars has an overall ranking of ranked #200 based on the MAU data. I don’t know what this all means for the lifespan of Mafia Wars but until it’s shut down or everyone quits, we will continue to provide information relating to the status of the metrics.

  1. you (and everyone else) always seem to look past the the facts that are not on a graph or spreadsheet, and that is the profit that zynga makes from the players.
go look at all their other games closely and try to surmise how much people spend on that game.
we know that players drop tons of money on MW... maybe not all players, but enough of them that it makes a huge difference DESPITE HOW MANY PLAYERS ARE PLAYING, it's more like how many players are PAYING. even just the high end fighters and VIP subscribers probably spend more money than the entire player base of some other games ranked higher than MW on a DAU chart.
I don't think there's any chance of MW shutting down soon as long as enough players are dumb enough to keep paying loads of cash just to be able to ice their foes. ;-)

    1. That's the only reason the game is still here. It's not what it used to be. Many of the big money spenders have quit. I think players are getting smarter. I know I've stopped spending they way I used to. I reached all my goals on stats, I can serial level to get rps if need be thanks to the Arena and feel there is nothing left for me to do. VIP is about all I do now.

    3. I don't think there are enough big spending players to keep this game going for another couple of years. None of us know of course, it's all speculation, but you have to figure it takes a certain amount of money to keep the game going and updated. Add in the fact that Zynga as a whole doesn't seem to be doing well financially and this game looks like it's nearing the end. Considering all the layoffs at Zynga recently I seriously doubt MW is a big money maker in the end. Sad part is the game is already ruined regardless of the metrics. MW as we knew it a few years back is over. Hell of a run though..lol

  2. What I find interesting is that it has now been almost a month and the ranking on appdata are exactly the same as they were in this post, 246 on the DAU, and 404 for MAU. Meanwhile, over on metricsmonk, Mafia Wars has lost over 10% of it's MAU. Seems strange it could lose 10% of its players and have its ranking remain the same. It's possible, I guess...

    1. It would make sense if the total volume of game players is in a fairly steady and even across the board decline which I think it is.

  3. Probably about 5,000 to 10,000 hardcore daily players at this point. The rest are mini's and casual players.
