Zynga Encouraging Accidental Purchases?

Share:

When Raven Booster Packs were introduced to the game, I wondered if there was a confirmation screen like we see with the Collectable Stat Cards [1]. I wasn’t willing to waste 135 or 260 reward points to find out. Today I learned the answer which is a not so surprising NO. Lion Sachin of the {ASS} Family was the first victim I’ve seen when earlier today he clicked on one my mistake. He got the stuff and 135 reward points were taken from his account. Nobody should need to purchase a Raven Booster Packs as there is a strategy and The Raven is easy to beat [1].

Screen jumping and module shifting are the main culprit but there is something else to consider. If you notice, the Raven Booster Pack banner looks a lot like the actual Raven banner. Many times I’ve initially thought the Raven was active when I saw this booster pack banner. I can see how players might be too quick in their excitement and click on the purchase button by mistake.

When Zynga added a confirmation purchase button to the Collectable Stat Card banner, they were quite proud of this action. They made a blog post about it and from that point on players no longer complained about losing 15 or 42 reward points for accidental clicks [1]. You would think Zynga would apply this to any purchase button residing on the Home Page banner but they haven’t. Many have lost reward points during the 7 Day Deal Promotions as well [1].

To protect players from accidental clicks there is an option offered in the Spockholm Mafia Toolbar . Simply remove the offending banners which contain purchase buttons (most of them these days). If they aren’t there, you can’t click on them by mistake. Go here for instructions.
Activating the “confirmation to RP spending feature” would be the obvious choice BUT Zynga designed newer purchase button to bypass Spockholm Protection. Notice how most purchase buttons on the Home Page Modules have an image of a reward point.

Team Spockholm uses this image in their code to add confirmations which are represented by a key image to indicate they are locked.

It’s pretty slick that Zynga removed the reward point image in the Raven Booster Packs. The reward point image is also missing from any module purchase buttons released after Team Spockholm added their own confirmation system. It’s as if Zynga did this on purpose so players would continue to make accidental purchases. Not very cool! Team Spockholm will most likely figure out a solution before Zynga would ever add confirmation buttons and let us use our reward points to buy things we actually want.

If you do fall victim of these strategically placed purchase buttons, you can contact Customer Support or call the Zynga Billing Hotline at 1-800-762-2530. As far as I'm concerned, this is a billing issue. If I buy reward points and they are taken from me due to elements out of my control (screen jumping, module shifting, intentional protection bypassing) then I should be reimbursed. The Customer Support site has changed so you will need to set up a Social Support account before you can access Live Chat or send them an Email. For more details go here.

  1. Yes, it happened to me just Sunday night. I contacted Zynga and to no avail they refused to refund my reward points even though I had not used one item in the booster pack. Their excuse was that I had allocated the 21 skill points already (which I didn't even know was part of the booster pack because I never considered purchasing it). I would have gladly let them take 2X the skill points away if they would have just refunded my hard earned reward points. I think it is a very deliberate ploy to get us to use our RPs.

  2. As for accidental purchases...they are driving my crazy. I ran into it with the Werewolf Hunter event. I had completed the event and gotten my Eternal Moon --- but every time I clicked the window that came up about going to the fight it was telling me I'd bought one of those Silver Bullets for 10 RPs. I spent a total of 60 RPs on the worthless bullets AFTER completing the event. I wrote to support and they argued with me at first but eventually after I sent screen shots showing the silver bullets in my inventory they refunded my RPs.

Yesterday I got the daily popup window for the Treasure Chest and I knew I'd been getting a few of the golden keys in my free gifts so when it said "open with 1 key" I clicked...got a worthless piece of garbage and then instead of saying I could buy another for 9 RPs it continued to say "open with 1 key" so I assumed I still had another freebie...so I clicked and got another piece of worthless garbage and saw it had taken 9 RPs! I haven't written to support about this latest accidental purchase because I'm not sure I could prove it...I didn't get a screen shot because I didn't realize until after I clicked that window closed that I'd been charge 9 RPs. They need to add a confirmation box for each of these purchase items.

  3. It doesn't involve lots of RP but 3 or 4 times when I've been fighting (manual) the pop up to buy stamina has come up in the same place as the attack button and I've paid RP for stamina I didn't want or need for my levelling strategy

  4. do not forget the misleading treasure keys popup. Makes you think you have some in your inventory then take rp from you

  5. Not worth the 1 RP. Zynga can keep the Raven Achievement. Not worth my time.

  6. Zynga took 190 RP's from me in a Mission when the screen jumped last July. I avoided completing the other requirements and collecting from that mission for 3 months to allow Zynga to reverse the unwanted transaction. I went through a protracted exchange with Zynga Customer Service as they initially denied I had the RP's in my account to start with (I showed the receipt), then tried to deny that the RP's were taken by that screen jump/confirmation-free button, then eventually "determined that it could not have happened unintentionally."
AS the above story confirms, ripping off customers is now part of Zynga's business plan, so I limit myself to RP's earned in game play.

  7. This happened to me 37 times yesterday and I had to keep buying more reward points just to keep buying my new collectible stat cards. I love the collectible stat cards because they improve my stats.

    1. It would be impossible to do this with the Collectale Stat Cards as there is a built in confirmation window. There is a big difference in buying something you want to because you love them than buying 260 worth of stuff you can get for free. If you only love the cards because they improve your stats, you may want to look at speeding up your Global Property timers. You will get way more skill points and have much greater improvements.

  8. Has anyone succeeded in reversing the accidental purchase of the Raven booster pack? I am arguing with Z**** for a while now and, although I still have all items and enough skill points, they keep telling me that there is a difference in purchased and earned skill points... How could I possibly tell the difference? Great business plan!! Driving players away...
