The Arena brings a new type of ice into Mafia Wars. Even though I read every word of the FAQ, I assumed attacking another fighter until the red X appeared was an ice. I found it odd that my ices were always the same no matter how many players were in the fight. I started counting how many times I “iced” somebody in each Arena fight and the numbers never matched. Upon talking to other players, I learned that they also stated this was the case. I went back to the FAQ and found one statement that a addresses the red X’s and why you want to kill people. In the case of the Arena, you need to bring your opponents health to 0 in order to see the red X. Doing this gets you more points towards your overall score.
“You get bonus Score if you are able to reduce your opponents’ health to Zero”
So what are these ices you get at the end of The Arena? According to the FAQ, they are random rewards.
“Ices! : You might receive Ices based on your Score and Respect in an Arena.”
They are just one of many random rewards and are aren’t even real ices. They are fake! So what can these ices do for you? They do count towards Family Progression but their ratio to stamina is not very good.
You are already sacrificing your experience/stamina ratio when choosing to spend stamina in the Arena. In the example below, 19,199 stamina was spent in the Arena and my ratio was a disappointing 2.1. Thirteen ices were included in my rewards.
I spent about the same amount of stamina fighting in London and got 46 ices and a better ratio (note: the exp/stam ratio on the Assassin-a-Nator is not accurate in the image below but is still much higher than 2.1). Unless the Arena payouts improve, I don't think it will be very popular once the novelty of it wears off. The scary thing is Vampire Wars had an Arena and look what happened to that game [1], [2]!
I took screen shots of my profile stats before and after and these fake ices do count in your ice statistic. To me an ice has always meant that you fought an opponent and brought their health below 20. I’m not sure I like these fake ices showing up on our ice stats because they aren’t the same thing. It would be much better if Arena kills were tallied and the ices you were rewarded were double the number of kills just like in real fighting.

your last photo shows you got credit for the ices, and you even showed you got credit for them on family progression. sure the arena isn't the best place to ice, but those ices are not fake and they do count...you just proved it.
ReplyDeleteI never disputed that they don't count, they just aren't the same as the ices your earn bringing a players health below 20 which is what that profile stat represents. With the option for ices gotten in a different manner, this profile stat is no longer the same and these ices are fake.
DeleteThe ices you get in the Arena aren't a representation of how many people you've iced in the Arena. In fact they aren't even related to the number of people you've iced in the Arena. In the Arena, ice number is merely a type of "reward" now. Regardless of whether you've iced one person or 20 people in the Arena, you will get a completely different number, which is entirely dependent on your score and respect and shit. That's what she means by fake ices, in the sense that you didn't "earn" them by icing people, they were merely gifted to you.
DeleteThank you Carl, that was a good way to explain it. I'm glad to see that someone got what I was trying to say. I know its confusing for those who don't have the Arena yet and wondered if the gist of what I was trying to explain was there.
DeleteI still don't have the Arena, doesn't look like i'm missing much though.
ReplyDeleteSimilarly, I have a number of ices in London, but the number of wins recorded lags FAR behind which is backwards as it usually takes more than one win to gain an ice
ReplyDeleteis the Arena another Fight Tournament in the making? only time will tell.
ReplyDelete1St arena completed. Power card maxed out with over 359. VIP and no second arena. Getting ready to stop playing. Not good for the game if we all doing different things
ReplyDeletei'm still don't have the arena.... still waiting to activate on my account.....
ReplyDeletestill no 2nd part to the arena?
ReplyDeleteGetting the 1st part would do for me!
DeleteGot the Arena yesterday and tried it. I like the HTML5 code; other than that nothing but a poorly executed piece of fluff programming with little benefit. I can waste stamina almost as quickly on Las Vegas stam jobs without going through all the eye-candy tripe. I wont be returning.
ReplyDeleteJust another over-hyped and under-performing feature.
