Zynga would like you to believe that their overused in game character Rosario Dominquez came up with the quote "I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds" when referring to the End Of Days Mission Event.
At first I thought this was another example of Zynga using bad grammar in the game. We see it everywhere and I didn't think much more about it.
Thanks to a post made by Shalabh Mehta on our fan page (1) , I learned that this is a line from Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad-Gita, made famous by J. Robert Oppenheimer the father of the Atomic Bomb.
"We knew the world would not be the same. A few people laughed, a few people cried, most people were silent. I remembered the line from the Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad-Gita. Vishnu is trying to persuade the Prince that he should do his duty and to impress him takes on his multi-armed form and says, "Now, I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds." I suppose we all thought that one way or another."
-J. Robert Oppenheimer
Oppenheimer stated these words when he appeared on a television documentary called The Decision to Drop the Bomb in 1965.

ERMM!!!! History, Your countries History. I know you yanks learn it from movies but come on Jen. The WORLD knows that statement. I will pre Empt Zynga and tell you now. The Enigma machine was NOT recovered by navy seals. It was the SBS from the UK that robbed the submarine of the machine. LMAO
ReplyDeleteSHIVA....Look up that...lol
ReplyDeleteZynga has been using, without permission, products, graphics, quotes, etc since the beginning of the game.
ReplyDeleteRemember all the Porsche 911's and Hummers that disappeared from early loot? That was only after they got hammered by various copyright/trademark holders.
Another sure reflection of the moral turpitude of the company and it's founder.
They seem to permanently operate on a "do it now, ask permission later" basis.
More bad press. Sure to help the stock recover some semblance of respectability. Not! Hahaha.
It is appalling how they just keep digging. As in, if you find yourself at the bottom of a very deep hole, the first thing you should do is stop digging.
Don't give up your day jobs...
Great Homework thanks.
ReplyDelete@Les, I went to college for 8 years after High School in America and have never heard of that quote. I majored in Science so only had to take one History class and that wasn't covered. It also happened before I was born. I bet there are many American Mafia Wars players who did not know this quote. Just because you know something doesn't mean the whole world does. I know plenty of things that to me seem well known but to most they are not. I don't bash people when they don't understand things about medicine that to me seem like common and well known fact.
ReplyDeleteYes, Shiva the Destroyer. They would do well to change their allegiance to Loki, the Trickster, the Deceiver. The Pickpocket. The Thief.
ReplyDeleteI knew the mythology. I knew the history. I just wrote it off to obnoxious indifference.
I worked for a company whose motto was "we do it right". And they lived and breathed that honesty. They screwed me too, but that's a whole other handbasket.
Linkin Park also use J. Robert Oppenheimer speech in their song "Radiance" which came out in 2010. That's where I first heard it :)
ReplyDeleteIt's a quote from the English translation of a very ancient book (the Bhagwad Gita - at least a couple of millennia old). Don't think it can be called copyright infringement. :D
ReplyDeleteAnd seems a clear reference to the Oppenheimer quote, considering the event is titled - End of Days.
I'm just saying that a little more credit should be given to the person who was writing the fiction for this mission event.
