Daily vs Weekly Timer: They Can't Decide

Share:

There is an update on Zynga's struggle to choose a timer for the Family Progression feature. When the second wave of Families got the feature, they found they were on a weekly instead of a daily timer.

"Instead of a daily timer, members will have a weekly timer in which to maximize their contribution to their family experience. There is no advantage to having a weekly timer versus a daily timer, as the weekly timer simply gives one a week to earn 7 times a single day's possible experience. Ultimately, a member in either scenario will be able to contribute the same amount to their family. After a few weeks with the two experimental groups, we'll switch one group over to the other so that every family is on the same type of timer."/Zynga

Although Zynga claims there is no advantage to one or the other, strategic players can clearly see that the daily timer is better in the sense that it keeps you on track and there is less potential for wasted family and personal experience as well as energy and stamina. 23 days ago, I decided to create a thread on Get Satisfaction because I sensed the introduction of a weekly timer was possibly a ruse for an upcoming nerf. It was important to let Zynga know that players would prefer the daily timer. The topic has received over 1,000 "likes" and 184 of you bothered to click on the +1. The Facebook likes will not show an exact number and will change once there are 2,000. The +1 will keep this topic on the map. It's already been noticed by Zynga and is now "Under consideration".
Don Perogi, Community Manager even made a response. I couldn't help but laugh as he did a great job of giving us a non-answer and explained that the idea has always been "under consideration".  We can see that Zynga still needs more data. It's been about month so how much data do they need? We have to wait to find out which timer they will choose. If history repeats itself, Zynga will choose the weekly timer for the simple fact that the players would prefer the daily.

"When we introduced the Family Progression timer, we did so in two flavors with the intent of switching everyone to one of them once we had enough data to make a decision as to which was ultimately best for the game. In that sense, we have always considered not keeping the weekly timer. Both timers are still being considered. Stay tuned to the Mafia Wars blog (http://blog.mafiawars.com) for Family Progression news as it develops."/Don Perogi
I hope this thread will be upgraded to "Implemented" but I won't hold my breath. If you want to help get the point across, go here and click on the +1.

  1. I really don't care about the timer - I want Power Packs and the new hospital. THEN, perhaps, I'll worry about the fake clan stuff.

  2. I don't know. I can see how a daily timer provides more of an advantage, but I also hear a lot of people complaining that the tasks seem like chores. With the weekly timer, I just play my game and know I'll hit the marks eventually.

  3. What's The Matter MW LOOT LADY? Upset That Your Family Actually Has One Aspect Of The Game That You Actually Have To Be Patient At And Work For Like The Rest Of Us Do?

In Order To Help Increase The Overall Player Base This Game Needs To Slow It's Pace Some.

  4. You know what's interesting though? Extra experience ISN'T wasted. I remember thinking what a waste all the experience was at the "gold" level. However, say I have like 1000 XP needed, and I collect for over 20,000 XP, I level up and the next level is 19,000 less XP than I would have normally need. (Estimate) Check it out, I was surprised too. Although maybe you shouldn't say anything, as it will be "fixed" and claimed it wasn't supposed to do that.

  5. @anonymous #2, my Family has the Daily Timer and we are about half way to Level 8. I know for a fact that no Family with the weekly timer is even close.
@anonymous #3, I'm referring to wasted fam exp when one of your progress bars is at 100%, nothing in that category will count. Sure the large weekly individual exp bonuses work like you describe but can you get it to work without losing your unused energy or stamina before the level up? Didn't think so.

  6. @MW Lootlady.. my family got the family progression feature a week after most.. And we are on the weekly timer.. we are also halfway to level 8..so the fact is there are families out there with weekly timer halfway to level 8.. Still in saying that , i as G/F of {SMWF} family would prefer the daily timer.

  7. My family is 90% finished with level 6 and we are weekly, we also got the mission a week later, don't have stamina packs, or the Union Hall and while we won't ever catch you guys, there are daily families that we are ahead of, and we aren't a super strong family. We are a family that enjoys playing the game, but also enjoy our real families, we can go to games, coach soccer and have our in-laws over and still meet our weekly goals, by playing 1 or 2 days a week. Most of us play everyday, either at home or on a hotel computer. The flexibility that we gain by being a weekly family is far more important than a few wasted experience points, many complain about the number of events, but weekly families have 1 less to worry about. When people are forced to play everyday they are going to burn out, it's too much like work. I wish you would pursue a course of choice, let it be up to the godperson, if the family wants to be weekly, let it be weekly, and if the family wants to be daily, let it be daily, players then have a choice to seek out a family that suits their playing style, that would be the win-win, I get to play my way and you get to play yours.

  8. Jenn, For the first time I disagree with you, of course in hindsight only ;-) Today ours and many other families have been changed from Weekly to Daily Timers. This is an unmitigated Disaster ! I got Jobs on Gold, 500 Ices in 12 Hours, Helper on the way to Gold with only Props to go to Silver. So are they going to start me back from scratch at the start of the new day on the timer ?

After quickly finishing Familia(l) obligations in the Progression for the Week, the rest of the Week was Party Time indulging in Character development, Wars, Missions, Cuba Loot and that great Rave party now known as Jeff the Knife with those awesome Items as rewards. Now we have to be attached at the Hips with the Family Progression everyday. Miss a day and we lose.

However, we lose absolutely nothing by quickly covering 3 of the 4 Elements of the Progression within 36 Hours, if you plan the claiming of the rewards at each level with purrfection.

Now since this is the result of Zynga's Trials, this changeover may be final. You were afraid of a Nerf if Players got Weekly, but it somehow seems to be the reverse. Daily is the nerf. Don't you think so ?
