The Official Mafia Wars Blog announced that the Family Progression feature is now open to all players. You will find a banner for the feature on the Home Page.
There is a small twist and the Families that were added today have a different timer than the Families in the initial beta group. According to Zynga there is no benefit over having a weekly versus a daily timer. The reason for the differences is to see which one works better so we are all part of a test group until they figure it out. Eventually all Families will be on the same timer.
Instead of a daily timer, members will have a weekly timer in which to maximize their contribution to their family experience. There is no advantage to having a weekly timer versus a daily timer, as the weekly timer simply gives one a week to earn 7 times a single day's possible experience. Ultimately, a member in either scenario will be able to contribute the same amount to their family. After a few weeks with the two experimental groups, we'll switch one group over to the other so that every family is on the same type of timer.
Families with the weekly timer will be about to collect 7 times in each category and each level for the week. Players with the 24 hour timer can collect 1 time in each category and each level each day. If you need further explanation of the Family Progress feature, go here for a strategy guide which links to my reviews of the feature. I think I would prefer the weekly timer but the daily timer forces me to do things in the game that I should be doing anyways. A daily timer also gives you more control over your bonuses as they are not batched into 7 days worth. Since daily bonuses, if used strategically are more advantageous to leveling, I imagine Zynga will pick the weekly timer. Customer Support is working on the FAQ so we should expect to see that soon.
24 Hour Timer
Reset: 12 am PDT
Weekly Timer
Reset: Every 7 days
There is also a difference in the cost to buy off objectives. Players on the 24 hour timer can spend 10 Report to complete a task while players on the weekly timer will have to spend 70. As you make progress, the cost decreases.

ReplyDeletewORKS BETTER FOR dOWNUNDER PLAYERS!
THEWHALE
There is one HUGE advantage to the DAILY timer from what I see - it allows you to strategically "stagger" your "collects" into smaller chunks to fill those times when you don't need or want a HUGE amount of XP ... but just need a little bit to level instead of wasting half or more of an Energy Pack, Stamina Refill, or even Brazil Boost.
ReplyDeleteUnless there's some way to collect all three levels (Bronze, Silver, Gold) every day when using the WEEKLY timer, it's going to be the pits.
exactly what anonymous #1 said. you can assume that with that reasoning, everyone will end up on a weekly timer - i mean, look at what happened to mini e-packs... good ole Zynga
ReplyDeletewhoops. I meant agree with anon #2. :D
ReplyDeleteI have daily timer on my main account, and just got the weekly timer on my mini. The daily is easier so far since I know when I'm "done" for the day.... with the weekly one I have no idea if I've completed the crafting or done enough jobs or helped enough pals... of course the icing isn't applicable - you can never have too much icing ;-)
ReplyDeleteIt will be interesting to compare the 2 over the next few days and see which one feels better.
which properties in NY i must upgrade? I upgrade all there +10 lvls and nothing, still have only 0/35 :(
ReplyDeletethe daily ones are the best. They help me level up at least an extra 2 times a day whereas if I had the weekly I would level up 1 extra time a week.
ReplyDeleteDEFINITELY keep the daily one! (condolences to those with the weekly >_<)
perhaps the family could choose which system they want though?
"Perhaps the family could choose which system they want though?"
ReplyDeleteExcellent idea!
