Views On Gaming in the Connected Age

Share:

Casual Connect is a yearly event for the casual games industry and was held in Seattle on July 19th -21st. To learn more, go here.
Robert Tereck gave a presentation and discussed his view on the social gaming experience and focused on Facebook games, particularly those by Zynga.  The Big Fish Games Blog posted a nice summary of this presentation. It's a very interesting read and can be found here.
He made some valid points and brought up the gifting issue that is ever present in all Zynga games. While this presentation was anti-Zynga, we the players can relate to much of it.  If you have never heard of Robert Tereck, he has quite an impressive Biography which can be found here.

"Gifting was next up for Robert's presentation. He pointed out that every time you gift something, it brings with it a form of obligation and the feeling of reciprocity. To leverage this, of course, Facebook game developers limit a player's progress if they don't have enough friends playing the game. Roberts conclusion is that THIS is the game. The game isn't CityVille...the game is, 'how often can I spam my friends and lean on them before they push back?'."/Big Fish Games Blog

  1. Robert's conclusion is that THIS is the game. The game isn't (Mafia Wars) ...the game is, 'how often can I spam my friends and lean on them before they push back?'

His conclusion is insightful, but not he doesn't go far enough ... the game is SURVIVOR ... spam and event fatigue have caused the departure of many friends from the game ... whoever is the last one left wins (it won't be me)

just a few chosen milestones to complete and I'll join my friends in the Zynga-free Zone
