Death By Ice: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

Share:

Many players enjoyed the Death By Ice Event. In the beginning, I saw so many comments eluding to the fact that people think Mafia Wars is fun again. Families have always been a big part of the Mafia Wars community but not all players have had the opportunity to be in one. The Family Module was designed so ALL players could join or create their own Family. The Death By Ice has given so many players the chance to experience some of the reason why players have joined Families in the past. The camaraderie and team work to achieve goals is what the event was supposed to be about. I created a Family and named it the Assassin-a-Nators. Our goal was to master the icing event. Obviously we weren't trying to rule the Family world or be taken seriously. With the tag {ASS}, how could we be? We had fun with the name and couldn't help but laugh at our Friend Request personal messages.
Everything was going great, we mastered Death By Ice in about 4 hours.
Then this happened.....
Some Families decided that the event was now a joke because they weren't on the leaderboard. Nobody likes events that exclude players from participating. Zynga doesn't either and from day one encouraged players to join or create their own Family.
All of a sudden the {ASS} Family became public enemy #1. A War Group and Spreadsheet was started and other Families started attacking us non-stop and making up stories about us. To be fair, I honestly think these people believed what they were saying to be true. How could anybody question that we were using "stealth scripts", had an army of mini accounts, started an organized mass reporting campaign on the Families who attacked us and had Zynga helping us? Haider a fellow blogger and {ASS} posted about some of this on the Mafia Wars Maniac Blog. He shows proof that screen shots were altered to fit the hate campaign against us. Some players decided to leave the {ASS} for various reasons and we held no grudges, being part of a hate/smear campaign is certainly not for everybody.
We didn't let any of the negative get to us and kept on icing. When the ƒ๏ям๏ѕÂ 歡樂ƒůn團 took the lead, nothing changed. The {ASS} Family was still the target and that was proof enough for me that all the hate was personal and had nothing to do with the leaderboard. Jealousy is a strong motivator and accusing the people who are kicking your ass of cheating often makes one feel better.
The Mafia Wars Gods held the #4 position for quite a while with only 52 members. With two days left of the event, they decided to fill up and very quickly took the number two spot. It was funny to see members of the Families who were against The {ASS} Family join the Mafia Wars Gods Page to cheer them on. Their reason for the support was that the Mafia Wars Gods were an established Family and we had no right to create one just for the event. I don't think they realized that many of the {ASS} Family were Mafia Wars Gods themselves. The {ASS} Family stayed strong and we were still happy even though we dropped to the #3 spot.
Here is the final view of the Leaderboard for the Death By Ice Event.
The Top 10 Families received prizes and here is a list of who they are. The Top 3 Families got A Two-Headed Snake (Gold, Silver and Bronze) and the rest of the prizes were Skill Points ranging from 20 for First Place and 5 for tenth. Congratulations to all the winners. Thanks so much to the {ASS} Family for helping me learn what being in a Family is all about. Many have told me but until you experience it first hand, it doesn't make a lot of sense. We have decided to stay together as this event turned us into a real Family.

  2. Congrats to all the families that fought together and accomplished ruby!

Good to see you decided to keep ASS alive (how rude indeed!) and that's what my family is also doing. We came together for this event and somewhere down the road we became a true family :)

  6. Just to participate in this event was an amazing undertaking for anyone who was part of any family. It doesn't matter if you were in the top 10 or if your family even gained the ruby level. We all have a common ground, we love this game, we love being part of something fun, and we love coming together bringing a sense of community to one and all. I had a great time, and I truly wish all who participated the best of wishes and Congratulations for honoring the spirit of Mafia Wars and coming together to support each other.

  7. Jen don't feel too bad, From what i understand it seemed that the leader board families only allowed the top 10% of there clans in, just so they could compete for the top prises, but the top 10 is not what you needed, I'm a samll 1700 and i am proud to say I finished the event with more than 10K in ices, and if i would have been able to find 99 more like me, the little guys would have hit 1 million plus, It was possible I burnt 1 wireless card, 1 cable modem, many rp's but it was possible, top 10% only means you have been playing a lot longer, and have bigger accounts, well that is my say Evad

  8. Congrats Jenn, glad you were able to get your rewards. I enjoyed the event, my family made ruby today while i was at work. I got home, and there was no way to collect ruby. What a crock. Way to go zynga. I wish zynga would realize that some people have to work. Ending this event during the after noon and giving me no way to collect ruby was stupid.

  9. Great Job!!! seemed strange getting kamied by so many from this group. Yes I fought back and hard. no, I was not organized with hatres at all, I just counter attacked. You might of won if you hit players you could beat. maybe!? I Love The Loot Lady!!

  10. Regardless of what happened, I was part of MwG, and am no where near the top 10%. There are many of us that wished we could have contributed as much as others in our family. We were kept on and encouraged with help and support from our leaders. I wasn't aware {ASS} was under attack by critics, and have great respect for all that fought. I did have {ASS} added to my filter as one of the families not to attack, and it remains, as do the others. Props to all, and much respect.

  11. well, if my fam had 99 more folks like me, we would have finished 5th. :D

as it is, we got gold with about 1 day to go and it'll b a long time before i bother to fight out of italy again - if ever. 2 hours to burn my stam bar wasn't much fun.

  12. sorry for the off topic but i was not able to collect my MA item even we beat the time...and the death by ice page is no longer on my main page.

any player experiencing my problem too?

  13. I think you've been a bit creative with your retelling of the event here.

From what I could see (and I don't have a strong opinion on the matter either way) the hate was due to what many saw as blatant cheating by using scripts to do the work. It wasn't a personal thing.

ASS wasn't the only family to receive criticism, but they did get a lot. I put that down to them being more vocal than most about their script usage.

This post isn't intended as an attack or anything, I just think it's rather important to at least mention the above in the interest of fairness.

@ anonymous, 6:58pm, if you think formosa or any other family in the top 10 achieved that number of ices by physically clicking EVERY SINGLE ONE of them, you're out of your mind.

  16. Its really sad to say that ASS got plenty of HATERS!!! They are just envious and jealous! Those haters suck!

  17. I think i was the only one out of the top three that did not cheat to get my ices... so do not tell me you all did not cheat i seen it first hand.

  18. So are scripts legal now in MW? I have never used them for fear that my account will be deleted.

  19. Congrats to all who made Top 10 & to all who joined a family & played Top 10 or not. While we made the Top 10 the reward was actually crap for the 8 days of work we put into it. The main reward for us was in working together, goofing off, fun smack talking, & making a whole lot of new MW friends that will last for a lot longer than 8 days or some silly Skill Points.

  21. I belong to the MWG group, I first try to apply to the Family, even when I was stronger to some family members, I couldn't enter.
Then I enter to ASS, from day 2 of the event, I do my share, and it was fun, many times we get pretty close to the #1, and sometimes Ape get only 3k from us, but we keep fighting. Then, MWG in a few hours take the second place and they go from 400k to 600k incredibly fast, that was amazing. I think it was a fun event, but probably only for the 400 people involved ...

  23. The criticism had nothing to do with "Blatant use of scripts" as the above poster suggests. Teams such as AMEX/Bane (very much anti-scripting themselves) who were publicly backing MwG (a large group of blatant script users) were attacking because ASS wasn't a real family by their definition and made a mockery of clans.

Well done Jen. As one of the new members of {ASS}, I was struck by the way the group stuck together through the entire event. No real complaining, no hard feelings when people left, and just a general sense of "family". I'm not the strongest player, but not bad either. I managed about 6K ices in spite of repeated attacks. I think I was iced probably 1000 times. So be it.

The end result for me? I found a fun, helpful, and dedicated group that has renewed my sense of fun in this game. No matter any faults in the event, those that found fault and made accusations, or any issues Zynga may have had, this was just plain fun for me. What else could people want from a game?

  25. Congrats should go to every player that particpated. Personally I enjoyed the event..and while I normally go after every last mastery...I chose to join a crew that I liked because of the name..Macaroni and Cheese (whose goal is to have fun while playing MW and eating mac and cheese)..and we only got as far as bronze.,,and that was just fine.

  26. I am glad that the ice event is over. every time i level up i being ice less than 10 seconds wtf you guys really need to get a life man...

    ReplyDelete
  27. 2 things
1- there is such a marked line between the top 5 ice numbers and the next 5 even that it seems clear that the top groups were using some method other than simply working the random fight list. denying it just makes me lose some respect

2- this was definitely a very fun event that got a heavy participation in our clan. The rewards were not even what we were about, merely the goal and reaching it. I could care less what some other family did or spent to get a top ten, our family had a blast and would like to see more family events.

    ReplyDelete
  28. i received invitation from a friendly family (ruby mastered) to join them but i didnt left my small, first clan & i am quite satisfied with gold mastery item i got with them..thats what a family means..trust & loyalty,,its more then getting a virtual item which will become obsolete soon ..you guys made mockery out of whole clan thing..changing one family after another for loot..thats why u were attacked...not hate commenting but just letting you know the "real reasons" for you getting attacked ...

    ReplyDelete
  29. I guess all the hate stemmed not from using scripts (impossible to manually ice the event IMO) but HOW it was used to get to the top ten.

Question: Did they or did they not ice dummy accounts on auto-heal to "complete" this event through script usage?

This is the real issue here.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Great event and I really didn't understand the fuss about {ass}. I thought a clan is famous because it has the strongest player and not because they are icing x player in a certain amount of time.
On the other hand, I didn't mind the discussions and a little hate in the game (if it is within boundaries) because that means that MW is still alive.. ;-)

  33. just two quick remarks:
1, sy wrote about the rewards: the rewards never worth it in MW... eg.: doing Bangkok through for some loot items and some extra skill points?? I really don't think I want to do Bangkok all over again!
2, the huge gap in the number of ices between place #4 and #5 made me wonder... no judgements, just wondering about it

Altogether, fun event, really pulled my family together, and I guess the others as well regardless of the endresults.

  38. I am proud to say I am on the {ASS} (ASSASSIN) team, they adopted me on day one. I was surprised when I was accepted, I am a regular everyday player with regular stats who had never been in a family before. I have always prided myself for always showing respect to my everyday MW Family and they also in turn showed me upmost respect. This event and my {ASS} team was no different, we became friends with a common love for the game..we had a ball of fun. I hope everyone came away from this event with new friends, a new since of family, and a renewed love for the game...If you didn't you missed the whole point.. when MW's is not fun anymore you need to find something else to do with your time. ;)

  39. @ Chris "MIG n00basaurus" No, I don't, and I struggle to see how you came to that conclusion.

I did clearly state that many of the families were criticised for it, it's just that ASS were more vocal about their usage than most so they got more heat.

    ReplyDelete
  40. @ Anonymous 9:02pm Perhaps some were attacking ASS for being an events family, but there's no doubt a lot of the criticism was due to script usage or more so how they used them.

You only have to visit the official forums to see that. There's barely a mention of the fact they're an events family.

  41. AMEX and their cronies who are on the We <3 ASS fb page, (originally called We HATE ASS) continue to ice ASS members, as well as FORMOSA well after the event has been over. They aren't attacking tagged MwG members though, the godmother for AMEX actually went on to the MwG boards (along with making a pact with MwG family leaders) to specifically target ASS and FORMOSA to help MwG win. So the argument I've read here about AMEX creating the ASS page due to script usage is quite amusing. Please explain how MwG, in 2 days, jumped from a distant 4th to a runaway 2nd? As for the claim that the creation of the ASS family was somehow blatantly disrespecting clans, what a joke. Did you even ice in this event yourself? Did you not see the fight lists? Did you not notice the probably hundreds of new tags that had never been there before the event? The event was created to promote families, and to encourage the creation of new families. Well established clans such as AMEX would not have allowed random people to join their families and everyone knows it. But because they have spent small fortunes on this game, they decide that they have some sort of monopoly over mafia wars families in general and decide to single out a single new family to "declare war" on? All this while personally attacking Jennifer on their page and on the spreadsheet they created for the event, photoshopping screenshots changing words that ASS members had said, lying and exaggerating about ASS at the same time? As a non-tagged player, I was very grateful to have been taken in by ASS, and to have been part of a true family experience that was enjoyed no matter who attacked us, which is now leading to the family not disbanding as originally planned.
AMEX, BANE, KillerClowns, SIN, Rsquared, BRICK, the list goes on and on as far as clans that instead of worrying about their own business, relentlessly attacked ASS during the entire event, 24 hours a day, should be ashamed of themselves.
I have worked hard on my personal stats for some time, and was hoping to one day be part of one of these clans. Seeing how they operate, and how little integrity most of these people have, I will stay with ASS thank you very much.

    ReplyDelete
  42. As an {ASS} member I can say that we were not icing clones...we fought on the fight list and that was made a lot more difficult with the bullying.

As for use of scripts.....how many families that took part can actually say they didn't use a single script on any day during the event.

  44. Family event was one of the best i've seen in some time....it's fun working with a whole lot of people with the same target....got ruby 2 days before closure....saw a lot of people who had 5k ices and 1000 level icing 5k more in just 7 days and not bothering how many times they were iced in the process....hoping to see some more.....but hey that's not Zynga's style.....may be a job needed which to be completed by whole family or anything like that...it'll be something to look for in near future!!

  47. Extract from Rob Warner of MwG above...

Regardless of what happened, I was part of MwG, and am no where near the top 10%. I did have {ASS} added to my filter as one of the families not to attack, and it remains, as do the others. Props to all, and much respect.

Lol nice admission of using fight scripts by MwG there Rob.

Different people will have had different reasons for attacking the leading groups. I however believe it was due to the fact that mini accounts were created specifically for this event, put on auto heal and various tabs open running fight scripts 24/7 to attack those mini accounts which caused most of the condemnation. Manual fighters need sleep and breaks and just cannot compete with that so scripts have an unfair advantage.

It has nothing to do with as Jen says "because they weren't on the leaderboard" or due to being personal or hating for forming a family just for the event.

I've seen myself posts made on forums from players in the winning teams bragging about minis and use of scripts so don't buy into the fact that the top families fought manually.

Also with regards to Haider's post on the Mafia Wars Maniac Blog, why on earth would someone who is taking a valuable place within an oversubscribed, capped 100 membership of an icing contest even apply to go into witness protection where they wouldn't fight? If he didn't want to be attacked, why just not untag from ASS or not heal?

No hate here, just stating facts.

Lol nice admission of using fighting scripts there Rob.

I believe that the attacks on the top families (not just ASS but Formosa, APE and MwG) were not as Jen states because they weren't on the leaderboard or due to being haters or jealous it was due to the fact that fight scripts were blatently being used 24/7 with autoheal to attack (in some cases) mini accounts that had been created with low health just for this purpose. I have seen myself posts in forums by members of these winning teams confirming this was going on so argument that all of these screenshots were photoshopped just doesn't hold true.

Manual fighters have to take breaks and sleep, so scripts ran 24/7 from various tabs clearly will always have an advantage.

With regards to Haider's blog on Mafia Wars Maniac, why on earth would someone take a position in a capped 100 membership icing event and apply for witness protection to prevent them from attacking or being attacked? If he didn't want attacks then why not remove the family tag or not heal?

No hating here, just stating facts.

I'm an APE and I'm proud of it. We ended 4th and I guess all top 4 who were on the leaderboard have been under attack of all kind of clans. People who couldn't stand that we were up there.
I spent about 700RP to help my APE family to get there were we ended and I had a lot of fun, and RSI in my fingers. We played 18-20h a day and didn't do it for the prizes.
I congratulate all people who enjoy this event, no matter how much ices they made.
Pitty we had 2 hostile wars during this event, cause a lot of families got attacked by APEs. Still we're being under attack of bad losers.

I want such an event again, because I loved it.

I dont recall at any time BANE supporting any clan/group in this... IDGAF who won, or how they did it.... All that mattered to me was having non stop live targets - ASS provided that, as did the rest of the top clans in this, which is EXACTLY what I stated in the thread that the LL removed :D

Hell I could post enough whiny emails from MwG members crying that we were sitting on them too, so kinda contradictory mr anonymous huh? :D

  52. I hit alot of script users that were healing just cause it was an easy ice among all the dead x's on fl. Some were ASS clan some were not, I didn't really pay attention just remember the ASS tag cause it was one I had never seen before. After mine made the ruby some of us left our tag to help out friends to reach ruby. We all went to various groups and had a blast chatting with each other and helping reach the goal. I suppose that would be considered cheating as well even if we didn't reach top 4? It's a game have fun with it. If your not having fun then your not doing it right!
