Default Important Announcement Concerning Pirates: Rule the Caribbean! (5/23/2011)

Dear Pirates players,

Our goal at Zynga is to bring players the most fun and engaging social games on the web. Despite a strong community, the popularity of Pirates has declined significantly. We have decided to shut down Pirates in 90 days and focus our efforts on bringing new and innovative games to our players.

As of today, Pirates is no longer available to new users and will not accept additional purchases. Existing players will be able to access the game until August 22, 2011. Below are some frequently asked questions that may help out.

To help us transition the closure of the game we are leaving this goodbye thread open until August 23, 2011. We’d like to hear your favorite memories about your Pirates experience. Please take a moment to say goodbye to Pirates with us.

Thank you again for choosing Zynga as your favorite place for social games.

Sincerely,
Zynga Game Network

Some could ask if the same thing will happen to Mafia Wars as the numbers slide doesn't appear to be stopping. I compared the the Application stats for each game and it looks like there is still time for us. You can see the Pirates game is flat-lined way at the bottom. This news doesn't really affect Mafia Wars players but it's interesting to see what can happen when people stop playing.

  2. The numbers for both games are in a totally different category. 4000 Pirates daily vs 1.4 million daily MW players leads me to believe that we are safe.
My question is..... what would the cut-off point be for MW.? ...the point where they decide that 'it's over, let's pull the plug'..??

  3. LOL, I've never heard of Pirates. I've been wondering what the percentage of daily players that use spocklets, etc.? If Zynga does come out against them, I think Mafia Wars will drop like a rock.
