There is a interesting Mafia Wars family amongst us. For sometime now, I’ve seen players comment or ask about “Phantom” profiles. When you run into one on the fightlist it will look something like this.
An entire family of phantoms was discovered and it’s got people talking. If you view the roster, you won’t be able to attack anybody unless you can figure out how to get to their profiles. I won’t reveal their secrets but those who are computer savvy should be able to figure it out. This isn’t the result of a bug and according to Martin from Team Spockholm, it’s just clever use of symbols and images.

Press and hold Alt and type 255 on the num pad. It makes an invisible character but don't know about the invisible picture. :o

Delete*whisper* Family Manager will pick up their ids and link their profiles, too.

ReplyDeleteI believe something like this already happened few years ago. Zynga took measures against hiding players and displayed them as chicken+ID.

the invisible picture is simply using a solid black image as your facebook profile pic. I was able to figure out one of their FB profiles and the same black pic is used there. :)
ReplyDeletePaul - the image could be a transparent gif, but I'm not sure if you can have that as your FB profile pic.
ReplyDeleteZynga should fix this for them by removing the ability to use non-printing UNICODE characters other than a single space (including non-printing spaces, half spaces, quarter spaces, etc.) For my part I wouldn't mind if they eliminated everything other than straight ASCII text.

ReplyDeleteHere is a question regarding this, Does this show on all major web browsers or is it only in FF/Chrome? I know the use of certain tags and symbols will not show in IE but as far as i was also aware, certain scripts do not work using IE anyway.
ReplyDeleteThe way i see it is this group must have someone with good knowledge of ASCII codes for the browsers not to pick up the names.

ReplyDeleteI have a phantom name. it's just one simple character. it's invisible on firefox but can barely be seen in Chrome. even if you see it in chrome, you can't click on it. I don't show up in other players updates when attacking but I do show up as level 2970 under players that attacked you under rivals. hard to see though. perfect for a sniper account.

ReplyDeleteThere's no way to "really" phantom, even for those that think they have an "invisible" name. All someone has to do is highlight where it "should" be then right click and "inspect element" or "view selection source" to find the info. It's no more rocket science to decipher them than it is to attempt to hide them.
ReplyDeleteI guess by clicking on "show items use" after an attack-fight you can see oponents inventory and there maybe the name will appear. I have not come to fight any of those ghosts yet so not sure if any this works.Or normaly where the name should be even if it is invisible perhaps by moving your mouse there you can click there and see more info like his profile and those "attack" "add to rivals" "sucker punch" etc
